The Ontario Dental Association was founded in 1867. As of 2017, there have been 144 Presidents. We are often asked why the ODA has had 144 Presidents, but has been an association for 150 years. We turned to ODA Librarian and resident ODA historian, Catherine Morana, for an explanation. Here’s what she told us:

“You won’t find a President for every year between 1867 and 2017, because there is no existing record of an ODA President between 1880 and 1888. Also, some Presidents served more than one term: Dr. H. R. Abbott served three terms; Dr. G. C. Davis served two terms. Therefore, 144 individuals have been elected ODA President over the course of 147 sittings/terms of an ODA Presidency.”

Election of Board Members and Executives
As a matter of procedure, at the General Council Meeting held in the spring, ODA General Councillors select ODA Board members. The Board, in turn, elects the Vice-President from among its members.

The Vice-President succeeds to the office of President-Elect in the year following their election. The President-Elect succeeds to the office of President. The President succeeds to the office of immediate Past-President.

The President and President-Elect, along with the Past-President, will be among the spokespeople on important topics for the ODA.
